The most anticipated sports sim of the year has finally arrived. This year’s Football Manager 2023 is the most substantial upgrade the franchise has seen in years, bringing a new level of realism to the game, including brand-new physics and broadcasting options. But how does it hold up on console?

The main difference this year is the addition of a redesigned pitch view. Instead of a top-down overhead view, players now appear as if they are playing on a real-life 3D pitch, complete with resplendent TV-style graphics. This gives a much more authentic feeling to the game and also provides genuine visual feedback on how well or poorly your tactics are working.

A number of small improvements have been made to the gameplay as well. Running backs no longer drift across the field, collision detection is more accurate and the animation package is improved overall. Throwing animations have been tweaked to be smoother and the catching package is better at showing the ball in flight for players attempting to make a reception.

Sadly, the lack of player weight in mid-air and on ground is still a massive issue with the game. This has been an issue for the last few years, and is something that needs to be fixed if this series is going to stand up against the competition. Hopefully this can be addressed in a future update as it will make a huge difference to the authenticity of the game.

License-wise, fans should be happy to see some old favourites returning from previous games with their correct names and colours. AFC Richmond, the fictional team from Apple’s hit comedy show Ted Lasso, joins the roster alongside Juventus, Arsenal and many other clubs. Women’s teams are also more prominently featured this time around, with the English and French leagues being included as well as a re-creation of last summer’s Women’s World Cup that can be played with actually qualified teams or the fictional ones of your choosing.

Overall, if you’re an FM fan then this is a must have. The PC version will undoubtedly remain the go-to for hardcore fans, but this Xbox Edition – or ‘FM 2023 Console’ as EA is calling it – offers a very good experience that should please most fans. With a strong focus on the football action, tight, rewarding moves and real-world realism on the pitch, this is a good choice for fans of the genre. It might be slightly lacking in features compared to the desktop version, but with plenty of live service content and quality-of-life improvements, it should prove an enjoyable experience for those who choose to take on the role of a football manager.
