A licensed NFL game that focuses on five-on-five, arcade style football with hard hits and tough tackles. NFL Xtreme is not like the more traditional, simulation-oriented games on the market at the time (or even today). Instead of trying to simulate the real thing, this game takes an arcade approach with complete disregard for the official rules. Players can run 80+ yard touchdowns, throw 90-yard passes, and evade and bull over defenders. There are no penalties, so players can run right through each other if they want. There are also special moves, such as spin, turbo, and flips, that can be used to elude defenders and make some spectacular runs.
Graphically, nfl xtreme is decent for the time. The players look a little misshapen and the animation is choppy, but it has a good frame rate and some pretty vicious hits. Unfortunately, the graphics aren’t enough to offset the lame playbook and poor control.
Another big disappointment is the taunting, which is one of the game’s most promoted features. While the game does have a variety of taunts, they are all repeated the same way by every player on opposing teams. This isn’t the same as NFL Blitz, where each player issues his own taunt, but it’s still a big distraction.
The game includes several gameplay options, such as an Exhibition, Season, and Playoff mode. There is also a Tournament mode where players can play against their friends, as well as an option to trade and draft. The game also has three different difficulty levels, adjustable weather conditions, various quarter lengths, and different game speeds. The game also supports up to two players via a Multi Tap adapter.
nfl xtreme is an arcade-style football video game that was released in 1998 for the PlayStation. The game was developed by 989 Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, and is a competitor to Midway’s popular NFL Blitz series. This game is a good choice for those who are fans of arcade football games, but don’t have the time or money to invest in a more in-depth simulation. While it does have a few nice features, the overall gameplay is disappointing and it’s not worth the high price tag.
