The World League of American Football (also known as NFL Europe or NFL Europa) is a professional football league that ran from 1991 to 2007. The league was backed by the National Football League and culminated with the World Bowl. The World Bowl was one of the most memorable games in American football. However, it is not the only league backed by the NFL.

The NFL Europe league consisted of six teams, five of which were located in Germany, and one in the Netherlands. The teams’ rosters comprised mostly of players who had been assigned to National Football League teams. They were considered ‘developmental’ players, so the league assumed most of their expenses.

Despite its efforts, NFL Europe has never achieved the same level of success as the NFL USA. In the end, many of the NFL Europe’s best players departed the league and returned to the NFL USA. The league has lost over $400 million over the last 16 years. This is a huge amount of money and has no chance of becoming profitable in the future.

The league was founded in 1998 and initially consisted of seven teams. These teams included the Amsterdam Admirals, the Barcelona Dragons, the Berlin Thunder, the Frankfurt Galaxy, and the London/England Monarchs. Later, the league expanded to twelve teams, and Cologne Centurions and the Hamburg Sea Devils joined the league.

The founder of NFL Europe, ELF, has identified eight cities where franchises will be located. Five of these cities were previously home to NFL teams. In addition to those cities, the franchises will be based in the German cities of Berlin and Hamburg. ELF is a venture backed by Alexander Korosek, former managing director of the WLAF and a general manager of the Frankfurt Football Team.

The NFL has already played games in London and Mexico City and is looking to expand its marketing footprint in continental Europe. In its 2022-to-2025 schedule, the NFL will play four games in Germany. Munich and Frankfurt will host two games each, while Dusseldorf could be added later. NFL telecasts are Germany’s second-most watched sports programming.

NFL Europe was founded in 1997 and originally consisted of six European teams. The league’s attendance had been high when it was known as the World League of American Football (WLAF). However, attendance declined as the league grew unpopular. Teams in North America tended to be based in big cities without NFL teams. This led to a lack of TV money and player wages.

NFL Europe is an American football league based in Europe. Currently, six teams play in the league. Five of them are based in Germany, with the other in the Netherlands. The league was originally known as the World League of American Football and was partially sponsored by the National Football League. It was formed in 1991 as a spring developmental league and changed its name in 1997 to NFL Europe.
