The NFL East standings can be a dogfight right now between the New York Jets and the Houston Texans. The New York Jets have the most attractive record, of course, but they’re also the team with the most trouble at the moment. Quarterback Mark Sanchez has looked unsure of himself, and the running game has been less than stellar, to put it mildly. It seems as though the Jets might not be ready to go into their bye week on top of the division.
Meanwhile, the Houston Texans are hot on their heals after beating the Green Bay Packers in Week 15. A pair of late turnovers, two fumbles, and just an average performance by Houston in general have them all within a win of the Atlanta Falcons. If the Texans can come out of their bye week still alive, they’ll be in the thick of the NFL East. But that may not be easy, because the Atlanta Falcons are the only team that has yet to lose. If the New York Jets drop one more game, they’ll move into first place in the NFC East.
The New York Giants are in another tight race with the Philadelphia Eagles for the final NFC East division spots. The Eagles can’t catch the Giants, who hold a one-game lead, but could add to it by winning their final three games of the year against the Saints, Cowboys, and Giants. The New York Giants don’t play until the final week of the season, so the tight competition and a sloppy loss by the Eagles to the Saints last Sunday could very well decide which team finishes first in the NFL East. Sunday will decide it.
If the Giants win, and there’s no indication that they won’t, then they’ll take the NFC East. The Philadelphia Eagles will have to beat the hated Dallas Cowboys to win their division, and the New York Giants should have no difficulty doing it. However, if the Eagles lose to the Cowboys, or to the Giants, then the battle is on between the Eagles and the Giants for the second wild card spot. The Eagles have the advantage in several important areas, including the offensive line, running game, and defensive unit.
With the recent loss of Michael Vick, the Philadelphia Eagles will have to turn to Michael McAdoo, who has been playing well lately. The New York Giants, with the help of a great coaching staff, could lose to the newly acquired Tony Romo, and this could be a big game for the Eagles. The New York Giants lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs last year, and lost to the eventual champion Cowboys in the regular season. This is a game that the Giants could easily win, and many people have the Eagles winning this one.
The New York Jets will have to hope that Mark Sanchez can make the necessary plays to win the remaining games for the Jets. They lost their top two receivers, along with their top five offensive weapons, in Rex Grossman and Brian Westbrook. They also lost their best Cover Two defensive end, tackle duo of Michael Huff and Chris Smith, as well as two promising young corners, who might be able to help the Jets make the Super Bowl. I think the Jets will be in the playoffs, but just not as a powerhouse as the previous two Super Bowl teams. I expect the Jets to make a miracle, however.
