Getting a Football Result

football results

Football is one of the most popular games in the world and is played by teams consisting of eleven players. A large number of different tournaments are held every year at the national and international levels. The most prestigious is the FIFA world cup which is held every four years. In order to play football, a ball is used and the rules are regulated by the International Football Association Board. Several rules are to be followed while playing football and any violation of the rules is punished by suspension or expulsion from the game.

In the sport of football, results are determined by the number of points scored during a match. A team that wins a match earns a certain amount of points depending on the league in which it is competing. These results are published in the official scoreboard at the stadium and also on television.

When a team is chasing the title or in danger of being relegated, it needs good results to keep its hopes alive. Commentators and fans often use the phrase getting a result when discussing a particular match. The term is a bit misleading as a win or a loss are still classed as results, but the meaning is slightly altered to mean that the team in question is going to catch up with the leaders or safeties, regardless of how it plays out.

A newspaper or magazine article that includes a football result is best written with an interesting angle. It might be based on an emotional story, for example a player’s first goal, or comeback from injury, or scoring against a former club. It could also be a match between rivals in the battle for the top spot, or a key match in a cup competition.

The report should be clearly presented at the beginning of a piece and include full team listings, substitutes (who went off and who came on) and the venue and the time of the match. It should also include a summary of any sendings off or major incidents. If there is room, a table of the current league tables should be included with the results, as well as details of the next matches to be played and where they will take place.

Radio and television can be more flexible in how they present sports results as they are not dependent on having to print them, but a newspaper or magazine should always have the full result on its pages. This should be at the top of the sports section so that it is easy for readers to find. Long lists of league tables and fixtures should be avoided; it is more effective to get someone into the studio to explain them in a knowledgeable way to listeners or viewers. Similarly, it is not usually helpful to read out the names of all players in a particular game. This is a waste of the listeners or viewers’ time and can lead to a monotonous sound.
