Football Defensive Positions

football defensive positions

Football defensive positions are the players who defend the offense from the opposing team. These players are tasked with a variety of different responsibilities, including stopping the run and blocking the quarterback in passing situations.

Linebackers (LB)

A linebacker is a key player in any football defensive scheme and plays on either the outside or inside of the defense. The linebacker lines up in front of the offensive center and guards, and is responsible for tackling runners as well as blocking the quarterback. The linebacker’s role depends on the defense that he is playing in, and most basic defenses have two on the field at all times.

Defensive Tackles (DT)

A DT is a hybrid of size and athleticism and is tasked with both putting pressure on the Quarterback and blocking the running back during rushing situations. He must be able to occupy the gap between the Center, Guard, and Tackle to stop the running play.

He must also be quick enough to break through blockers and make tackles in pass coverage. A good DT has strong hands, excellent agility and footwork, and the ability to adjust quickly on the fly.

Nose Tackles (NT)

A nose tackle is a big, heavy player who lines up in the middle of the formation. He’s tasked with halting runs and putting pressure on the quarterback, but his position requires him to be extremely strong.

The best nose tackles are able to get out of their stance and change directions, so that they can pressure the QB in passing situations. These types of players are a must for any team that uses a 3-4 system, as they can help shut down passing offenses.

Linebackers must be strong and quick, but also have good coverage skills and intelligence. This position can be a tough one to play because it is so important to be able to read the game and make adjustments in time to protect your team’s quarterback.

Free Safety (FS)

The free safety is a small to average-sized player who lines up in the middle of the defensive backfield. He is usually tasked with covering one of the wide receivers in an offensive formation, but he can also be used to cover a tight end or a receiver out of the backcourt on passing plays.

Defensive Ends (DE)

The defensive ends are the most physically dominant players on the field and must be able to get past and attack offensive tackles. They are tasked with making tackles on passing plays as well, but their main responsibility is to stop the run and prevent the ball carrier from getting to the Quarterback.

They must be able to run with and impede the ball carrier, and they must also have the speed to pursue the runner to the sideline where they can force them to fumble the ball. The defensive end is a very vital player on the defense, and their sacks often dictate the outcome of a game.
