The 2021 College Football Playoff was a fascinating and historic season in the face of a global pandemic. In the end, it was Pierce County grad Stetson Bennett and his Georgia Bulldogs that ran the table to become the school’s first national champion since 1980. Here’s how they did it.
The defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide enters the semifinal stage as the top seed in the CFP field. After slamming the Irish in the Rose Bowl and pounding Ohio State, Nick Saban’s team is poised to win another title in Miami. But can the underdogs cash in their final chance to derail the favorite?
This is the first time that the College Football Playoff has matched teams from the same conference in one of its semifinal games. The matchup makes sense, as both teams have had outstanding seasons. However, it may be a little too close for comfort for some fans who like to back underdogs in the championship game.
The game is set for Jan. 10. A week earlier, No. 2 Michigan will take on No. 3 Washington in the other semifinal at Lucas Oil Stadium. Both teams have undefeated records and won thrilling CFP semis to reach the national title game.
Alabama’s 2020 championship team was remarkable for a number of reasons, including the fact that they did it all while losing a ton of talent to the NFL draft. They lost a sensational quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa, two amazing wide receivers in Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III, plus multiple other key contributors on both offense and defense. Most teams would be crippled by that type of depletion, but not Alabama.
Despite the fact that they played a weak schedule, the Crimson Tide’s top-tier talent and coaching staff enabled them to overcome a number of obstacles to get to this point in the playoff. They will be looking to make more history in their final appearance before the selection committee.
The first of four College Football Playoff games is set to kick off at 8:15 p.m. ET on Monday, Dec. 31. The game will be televised by ESPN.
After an exciting weekend of CFP semifinals, a new national champion will be crowned on Monday night at NRG Stadium in Houston. No. 1 Michigan and No. 4 Washington are both headed to the championship game after battling in exhilarating CFP semifinals.
